What do you do when you have a work in progress that’s on hold and nothing new started? Well, if you love to write and you want to get excited about something, you create a new project for yourself.
I’ve been toying with an idea of writing a novella to be released for Halloween. I did the math and I can write 1000 words a day, every morning, and have it written in plenty of time to get it to my editor and have a cover created. The goal is to launch on October 18th-20th.
I just ordered this book to help me get in the mood for creepy.
I’ll keep you updated on my progress and the trials and successes along the way.
So what fun new project are you working on?
Interesting you bring this to light. While working on my niche romantic short stories, I have been penning a mystery/suspense/thriller online at the WriteOn community over at Amazon.
It’s just two short scenes away from its finale, so I guess it is more than just a fleeting idea at this point. However, I have never written a story longer than 20,000 words, and only one reached that length. I have found myself much more comfortable in the short story realm.
But, I feel as though I might be able to take this mystery/thriller and use the major plot points in the “shortish” story and flesh out some of the finer points and backstory in between.
Of course, all of this would not be at the mercy of my bread and butter love story 🙂 Good luck with your Halloween endeavor!
Dave, do you think that working on a side project helps sustain your passion for writing? For me, there’s nothing really like starting a new story.
To be honest, I think that’s one of the reasons I enjoy short stories so much more than the idea of a full-length novel! If I am able to deliver a complete story filled with emotion and attachment to the main characters in under 10,000 words, I would probably do that every single time. Because, like you, I enjoy the novelty of entering a new world of my own choosing as often as possible 🙂
I wonder what the market would be like for a book filled with a series of romantic short stories, ones that could be consumed in a single setting, but its emotional impact lasting so much longer?
By the way, on a completely different side note, I looked at your photo prompt posted yesterday (young girl, prom dress, carrying a lantern). I have never written paranormal anything, let alone romance. But, I have an idea now, thank you! 🙂
