Sure, affirmations are a handy tool to help you shift your mindset and achieve your romance writing goals. However, it’s easy to overlook their power. A few simple tips can help you get the most from your affirmation practice.
- Give it time.
You may feel an immediate response to an affirmation. Words, as you well know, can be quite powerful. However, you may not feel anything right away. If the affirmation suits your current needs, goals, and aspirations then give it a little time. A week is sufficient. If you’re not feeling anything after a week. Move on to tip #2.
2. Adjust it.
Affirmations often need to be tweaked to have their fullest power. For example, “I am achieving my romance writing dreams,” may be a perfect affirmation for one person while another may connect more completely with “I am achieving my romance writing goals.”
Simply changing that one word can make a difference. If you’re not “feeling it” with an affirmation (even one that you created yourself) try tweaking it a bit.
- Let it go.
Affirmations have an expiration date. That date depends on you, but it’s important to know that you absolutely will not be repeating the affirmation for the rest of your life. If you are, then it’s not the right affirmation.
The goal of any affirmation is to make that positive thought part of your mindset. It becomes part of your self-talk and your personal language. At a certain point, once you’ve acclimated to it, you’ll want to move forward with a new affirmation.
How long does it take? It depends. Some affirmations are perfect for today and only today. While others you might hang onto for months. Trust yourself and pay attention to how the words make you feel.
- You can use more than one at a time.
While I definitely don’t recommend reading or writing yourself a daily book of affirmations it is okay to have two or three that you embrace each day. They should fit your life right now, your habits, your goals, and your current mindset.
- Make them part of your routine.
I’m a fan of simple routines that support me to start each day with the best attitude possible. But these routines really do need to be simple. Complicated or overwrought routines bog me down. I don’t want to spend so much time and energy on the routine that I have little left for the activities of the day.
I was listening to a podcast the other day by famous lifestyle guru. He was saying that you had to do morning pages, and then a gratitude journal, and that you should track your fitness for the day, track your finances, yada yada yada.
I started giggling. How on earth is there time left in the day to exercise, spend money, or experience gratitude if you spend your entire day tracking and recording it? Oy. Make your affirmation part of your day but don’t complicate things. It should be easy and natural.
Finally, I urge you to smile when you read, write, or recite your affirmation. It makes a difference. Affirmations are a powerful tool. They can have a positive impact on your life and on your creative goals and endeavours. Use them well and change your life.
